Inside an old decaying hospital, a man was in a deep sleep.  He had been in a coma for many, many years, and the Life Support System was running on it's last leg.  In the final seconds of the Machine's life, the mans eyes opened.

The lighting of the room was very dim giving him little problem adjusting to it.  He sat up on the bed that he had spent many years, and with great haste unplugged all the wires that had fed food, water, and many other nutrients keeping him healthy and alive.  He got out of the bed, and stared into a mirror that was sitting on the floor. It revealed to him that he was thin but muscular, with long scruffy black hair, a long unshaved beard, and he was only wearing slick pants given to patience at hospitals.

He scavenged around the hospital's first floor for an hour.  Every time he tried to go to another floor he found that the stairs were collapsed or large amounts of debris blocked his path.  Unfortunately all he could find was a pair of comfortable blue jeans, a rough leather Jacket, and a pair of boots.  

Every so often he would try and check the weather through the windows, only to find that they were blocked with some kind of tough dust.  There were cracks in the wall and holes in the roofs with a good amount of light shining through.  So he assumed it was late in the afternoon.

After his search he made his way to a waiting room, took a seat in one of the cushioned waiting chairs. He put his head in his hands and thought:
Who am I?

A series of memories flooded his mind. All of the faces of people he had once known called him "Kevin" or "Kev."

"ok I'm Kevin…so what did I do for a living?" he soon thought
Another flood of memories spun through his head.  One of his first birthday thru sixth birthdays, then the years of school he had, his first kiss, his first dance, the love he felt around friends and family.  Then he remembered why he was there.  He was a firefighter, and due to a series of riots he had been sent all over town trying to stop fires that were raging.  During one stop however a large mob of people charged the engine he was at and beat him and his coworkers to a pulp, and left to vandalize the rest of the city. All Kevin could remember was blacking out.

"Well…" he said to himself "time to find out where everybody is…". He slowly got up from his chair and made his way to an EXIT. He inhaled, something in the air wasn't quite right, but he just couldn't tell.  He dismissed strange feeling he had, and opened the door.  He was completely awestruck by  what he saw.

He could see the sky was black with horribly dark clouds, that all seemed to flow towards a central vortex with what appeared to be a gigantic tornado just spinning far away.  He could see lightning shoot out from the clouds nearer the tornado, and what he guessed was rain falling out.   After this spectacle he glanced at the ground and all he could find was decayed or destroyed buildings, what used to be green fields and lush playgrounds, were as dry and as lifeless as a dessert.  He could feel a dry warm breeze blow bits of sand and old garbage across the cracked and decayed streets.

"My God…" Kevin managed to mutter in his horror "…What happened?'
